A Feast for The Eyes Awaits at Yogyakarta’s Bukit Bintang

Bukit Bintang, which means the hill of stars, is a tourist destination in Patuk village, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta. The place is favored by travelers on nights out in Yogyakarta. Tempo.co interviewed a visitor, Indri Wahyuni, 30, from Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, who said she often visited the hill in the evening during vacations to Yogyakarta.

“This place is great to chill and feast the eyes on the city lights. The atmosphere is tranquil,” Indri told Tempo.co in early September. Indri came with her friend, Sherly, a Yogyakarta native who loves visiting Bukit Bintang.

Sherly said she had visited Bukit Bintang several times but had never become bored, as she considered it the ideal place to relax and recharge. The site has also been dubbed the must-visit night time photoshoot location in Yogyakarta. “I love to be photographed here because there are lights in the background,” Sherly told Tempo.co.

Bukit Bintang looks over Sleman and Bantul regencies and Yogyakarta. As Sleman, Bantul and Yogyakarta are situated close to each other, as if in a basin, the hill provides the perfect vantage point to gaze at the thousands of lights that shine brightly from afar.

The hill also provides the perfect scenery for photography enthusiasts who come to immortalize the lights with their cameras. When capturing the nighttime scene, photographers love to play around with their cameras’ manual focus, different view modes, ISO levels, apertures, and shutter speeds.

When the evening is brighter than usual, visitors to Bukit Bintang can also see the silhouettes of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu, as if illuminated by the many house and street lights.

In addition to taking photos, visitors to Bukit Bintang can also enjoy grilled corn as an evening snack or sip wedang jahe (hot ginger drink) and bandrek, a traditional drink made from ginger essence, palm sugar, cinnamon, spices, and condensed milk. The food and drinks are sold by vendors around the area.
