About 400 people gathered at Cromwell Park at Malabar on Sunday for a family day to show their support for the victims of the 2002 Bali bombings ahead of tomorrow’s anniversary.
Event organiser Dave Seelin lost his wife Cathy in the attacks 14 years ago, while niece Candice Clarke (nee Buchan, pictured) lost her parents Steve and Geradine Buchan.
Mrs Seelin and Mr and Mrs Buchan were among nine Malabar residents killed.
Mr Seelin said about 400 people came to Cromwell Park on Sunday to show their support.
“We want to show the terrorists and the rest of the world it doesn’t matter what they do to our community, they won’t stop us from living our Australian way of life,” Mr Seelin said.
The Australian flags flown at the event were the ones that covered the coffins of repatriated victims who lived in the area.
The community enjoyed music from bands Salty Chips, The Melting Caps and Gypsy’s Lost Boys and rising star Chloe Buchan, along with a barbecue and face painting.
A pod of whales was seen in the water off Malabar Beach as the flags were lowered in the evening.
A minute’s silence will be held and 88 butterflies released into the sky to honour all the Australians lost in the bombings, when the Bali Commemoration Ceremony is held at Dolphin Point, Dunningham Park, Coogee at 10am tomorrow.
