Bali Considers Requiring Tourists to Disclose Bank Balances to Promote Quality Tourism

Bali, Indonesia – The provincial government of Bali is considering a new regulation that would require foreign tourists to disclose their bank account balances from the past three months, aiming to encourage higher-spending visitors and elevate the quality of tourism on the island.

Governor Wayan Koster revealed that this measure is part of a broader Draft Regional Regulation on Quality Tourism Management, which is nearing completion in the local legislature. The proposed regulation seeks to ensure that tourists have adequate financial means to support their visit and to help the island manage its tourism industry more sustainably.

In addition to financial disclosures, the regulation would mandate tourists to provide a detailed itinerary, including the length of their stay and planned activities. Governor Koster emphasized that the policy aims to mirror similar entry requirements imposed by other countries, noting, “This is to ensure everything is under control, just like when we travel to other countries, where we are subjected to similar policies.”

Tourism authorities in Bali hope that the initiative will deter low-spending visitors and help balance the challenges of rising visitor numbers with the island’s goal of promoting quality tourism. The plan reflects Indonesia’s broader efforts to enhance tourism standards, similar to visa requirements travelers often face when visiting regions such as Europe, the United States, and Australia, where proof of funds and detailed itineraries are typically requested.

However, implementing the regulation may pose legal and practical challenges, including how to verify tourists’ financial information and enforce compliance effectively. Bali’s government continues to work on the finer details as this proposal progresses through legislative review.
