Bali to Introduce New Entry Requirements Including Bank Statements to Curb Tourist Misconduct

Authorities on the Indonesian island of Bali are set to implement new regulations requiring tourists to submit three months of bank statements before being allowed entry. These measures, expected to take effect within 2026, aim to address longstanding issues related to unruly tourist behavior and to attract more affluent, respectful visitors to the popular holiday destination.

Crackdown on Misconduct and Cultural Offenses

The upcoming rules are part of a broader initiative to curb various forms of misconduct that have troubled local communities for years. Balinese officials have highlighted incidents including tourists posing naked or semi-naked at temples, reckless motorbike riding such as performing wheelies and racing without helmets or shirts, setting off fireworks in crowded streets, engaging in street brawls, and causing damage to public and private property.

Further complaints involve disrespectful behavior towards Balinese Hindu culture, with some visitors climbing on sacred temple structures and trees, actions considered deeply offensive in this religious society.

Additional Measures for Respectful Tourism

Alongside the financial vetting requirement, Bali plans to introduce a tourist levy and enforce stricter dress codes and behavioral standards, particularly at cultural and religious sites. These measures are intended to foster a more respectful atmosphere and preserve the island’s unique cultural heritage.

Previous efforts have included distributing “dos and don’ts” cards to arriving tourists and conducting joint operations by immigration and police forces to detect and penalize violators. Consequences for serious offenses may include fines, imprisonment, and deportation.

Bali’s initiative reflects a growing trend of tourist destinations taking proactive steps to ensure sustainable and culturally sensitive tourism, balancing economic benefits with community well-being and cultural preservation.
