Top Bali Tourist Destinations Enhance Insurance Coverage to Bolster Safety for Holidaymakers
Bali’s leading tourist attractions are stepping up their commitment to visitor safety by increasing insurance coverage following recent tragic events. Notably, Sangeh Monkey Forest, one of Bali’s most popular wildlife tourism destinations, has taken significant measures to protect its guests after a devastating storm impacted the site earlier this month.
Severe Storm Causes Devastation at Sangeh Monkey Forest
On December 3, 2025, Sangeh Monkey Forest, located in Badung Regency, was struck by one of the worst storms the area has seen in over a decade. The powerful weather caused dozens of ancient trees to topple within the sacred temple complex nestled in the forest. This natural disaster led to extensive structural damage—with almost 80 percent of the temple area affected—and tragically resulted in the death of a staff member when a building collapsed under a falling tree.
The attraction was forced to close for more than a week while management and the local community worked diligently to clear debris, repair damage, and conduct traditional cleansing ceremonies at the temple to honor their lost colleague.
Commitment to Enhanced Safety and Risk Management
In the aftermath, local authorities and management have intensified efforts to review and strengthen safety protocols. IB Putu Mas Arimbawa, Head of Abiansemal District, described the ordeal: “Several trees measuring up to 50 meters high and 1.5 meters in diameter fell, causing catastrophic damage to the temple structures.”
Sangeh Tourist Object Management Head, Ida Bagus Gede Pujawan, highlighted that while standard operating procedures and risk assessments had long been in place, the scale of this event was unprecedented and beyond human control. Nonetheless, the team is now instituting enhanced measures aimed at mitigating future risks related to severe weather and visitor safety.
One key adjustment is the installation of a manual alarm system to promptly alert visitors to evacuate the forest in case of rain or other hazardous weather conditions. Pujawan explained, “Considering the height of the trees and the nature of nutmeg roots, which spread sideways and do not deeply anchor, evacuation protocols must be swift and efficient.”
Increased Insurance Coverage Now Included in Visitor Entry Fees
Aligned with these safety improvements, Sangeh Monkey Forest has expanded its insurance coverage, which is now incorporated into the admission fees paid by all visitors. This comprehensive insurance policy covers risks specifically associated with wildlife encounters, including potential injuries such as scratches or bites and illnesses like rabies.
To ensure prompt medical response in case of emergencies, the attraction collaborates closely with the Badung Regency Health Office. The Abiansemal Community Health Center has been designated as the official rabies treatment center, guaranteeing quick transfer and medical care for any guests who suffer animal-related incidents.
Pujawan emphasized the importance of this coverage: “Our insurance protects visitors against permanent injuries or even fatalities. Safety and well-being remain our top priorities.”
Travelers Advised to Obtain Comprehensive Insurance Before Visiting Bali
While Bali’s top tourist sites are bolstering their protective measures, health officials and travel experts strongly recommend that all visitors secure comprehensive travel and international health insurance before arriving in Indonesia. Visitors should verify that their policies cover natural disasters, medical emergencies, and high-risk activities common on the island, such as wildlife encounters, mountain climbing, ATV riding, and surfing, which often require additional coverage.

Sangeh Monkey Forest continues to welcome visitors daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last admission at 4 p.m. The attraction offers a unique opportunity to experience an off-the-beaten-path wild monkey habitat. Besides Sangeh, tourists often visit the well-known Ubud Monkey Forest located in central Ubud or explore the lesser-known Alas Kedaton monkey forest in Tabanan Regency, favored by guests staying near Canggu and Tanah Lot.
