Bali Tourist Tragically Dies Amid Severe Flooding Caused by Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S

December 15, 2025 — A female tourist has lost her life in Bali as intense flooding swept through popular tourist destinations during the ongoing rainy season. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, amidst the severe weather impact of Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S.

Incident Details

According to I Nyoman Sidakarya, Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Agency, the tourist was found deceased underneath the Krisnantara Road Bridge in Tibubeneng Village, part of the renowned Canggu area. It is believed that she was swept off the road by rapidly rising floodwaters along with her motorcycle.

“We responded immediately by deploying five personnel to carry out the evacuation,” Sidakarya explained. “Reports indicated the victim was trapped in a culvert pipe beneath the bridge.” The rescue team successfully retrieved her body at approximately 10:30 AM local time. It was then transported to the Prof. I G.N.G Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar for further examination.

Official Statements and Search Efforts

First Inspector Ni Nyoman Ayu Inastuti from the Badung Police Public Relations Sub-Division confirmed that heavy rain and flooding had dramatically increased water currents near the bridge around 1:10 AM on the same morning. The tourist is suspected to have ventured into the floodwaters and was swept away while on her motorcycle.

A coordinated team comprising personnel from the Bali Provincial Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Bali Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Badung Police, and North Kuta Sector Police acted promptly to locate and recover the victim. Despite the body’s discovery, the motorcycle remains lodged in the culvert due to hazardous conditions and swift currents.

Inspector Inastuti added, “The victim is a foreign female tourist. However, her identity has not been confirmed as she was found without identification. We are working with relevant agencies to establish her full name and residence.”

Weather Warnings and Tourism Advisory

Bali and Indonesia at large are experiencing one of the most severe rainy seasons in recent decades, with Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S being a significant contributing factor. Weather authorities have imposed extreme weather warnings effective until at least December 18, 2025, with the possibility of extension depending on conditions.

Flooding has affected many of Bali’s top tourism areas including Seminyak, Denpasar, Legian, Kuta, and Canggu. Tourist influx to these regions has been met with widespread traffic disruptions, flight delays, and hazardous road conditions.

The Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urges both residents and visitors to heed official weather updates and exercise caution. Cahyo Nurgroho, Head of BMKG Bali, emphasized, “We urge everyone to remain vigilant and take anticipatory measures to ensure daily activities run smoothly and safely.”

Tourists are strongly advised to:

  • Avoid wading or driving through floodwaters, as currents can be dangerously strong.

  • Regularly check flight statuses due to ongoing delays and diversions impacting Ngurah Rai International Airport.

  • Consult accommodation providers about evacuation and emergency plans in case of escalating weather hazards.

Broader Impact and Context

This tragic death underscores the broader challenges posed by Bali’s increased urban development which has diminished natural water absorption areas like gardens and rice fields, exacerbating flooding in many districts. Earlier this year, flooding displaced over a million people in Sumatra, and Bali itself suffered its most severe floods in over 70 years, causing extensive damage in Central Denpasar.

Authorities continue to monitor weather developments closely and are working to mitigate risks in vulnerable areas. Visitors to the island are urged to stay informed through official channels and to prioritize safety during these hazardous conditions.
