Bali Boosts Police Presence in Tourism Areas Ahead of Christmas Holidays
As the Christmas season approaches, Bali is intensifying security efforts to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday period for both residents and the influx of tourists. With over one million visitors expected during the festive season, local authorities are implementing heightened measures to maintain order across the island’s popular destinations.
Operation Lilin and Operation Cipkon Agung
This year’s festive security initiative, known as Operation Lilin, is aimed at safeguarding the island throughout Christmas and New Year celebrations. Preceding this, authorities launched Operation Cipkon Agung on December 3rd, which will run until December 10th. The operation, overseen by Commissioner I Gede Suarmawa, Deputy Chief of Badung Police, is designed to assess current conditions and prepare for the larger scale Operation Lilin later in the month.
Commissioner Suarmawa emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Operation Cipkon Agung is not just an annual routine. It is a major responsibility to ensure the public can celebrate Christmas and New Year safely, orderly, and comfortably. Therefore, I ask that all personnel be fully prepared.”
Addressing Seasonal Challenges
The timing of the holiday season coincides with one of the most intense rainy periods Bali has experienced in recent memory. Heavy rainfall raises the risk of natural hazards, including landslides, floods, fallen trees, and other emergencies such as earthquakes and volcanic activity, which remain a persistent threat in Indonesia.
Suarmawa urged police and community members to be vigilant, “Public movement will increase sharply. Personnel must be sensitive to field dynamics, conduct early detection, and never underestimate any situation.” He further highlighted the importance of public trust and professionalism within the force, encouraging officers to “avoid arrogance, prioritize education, and take firm action according to Standard Operating Procedures if violations are found.”
Enhanced Patrols in Tourism Hotspots
Visitors to Bali should expect to see a greater police presence, particularly in high-traffic areas known for nightlife and potential opportunistic crime, such as Kuta Beach. Last week, Commissioner Agus Riwayanto Diputra, Chief of Kuta Police, collaborated with local leaders, including the traditional village heads, civil police (Satpol PP), local Pecalang security teams, tourism businesses, and community representatives to coordinate security efforts.
Commissioner Diputra confirmed that police will increase nighttime patrols in Kuta’s busy entertainment districts to deter criminal activity and maintain a safe environment. He also mentioned openness to work with local government authorities to implement additional control measures if needed. “The Kuta Police are committed to maintaining a safe, orderly, and conducive tourism environment by prioritizing preventative, human, and collaborative measures,” Diputra said. “We encourage the entire community, businesses, and other stakeholders to continue supporting efforts to maintain regional security for the well-being of all.”
Immigration Enforcement
Alongside the police, the Immigration Task Force has deployed personnel across Bali’s busiest tourist hubs, including Nusa Dua, Legian, Ubud, and Uluwatu. Their role is to verify that foreign visitors comply with Indonesian visa regulations and activities permitted under their stay permits.
Tourists are reminded that carrying a valid passport and relevant documents at all times is mandatory. Immigration officials may ask travelers to present identification, explain their plans, provide proof of accommodation, and show evidence of onward travel.
