Bali Introduces Single Digital Wallet for Tourists to Enable Seamless Payments
In a significant step towards enhancing the travel experience, Bali has launched a new digital payment system allowing international tourists to use a single digital wallet for transactions across the island. The initiative, known as the Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack (ITTP), aims to simplify payments at restaurants, shops, tourist attractions, and other local businesses, reducing dependency on cash and multiple currencies.
What is the Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack?
The ITTP is a comprehensive package designed to cater to the needs of international visitors by integrating various services into one seamless solution. The pack includes:
- A chip-based digital wallet linked to the national Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS),
- A prepaid SIM card with data,
- A local Indonesian mobile number.
This digital wallet allows tourists to pay instantly by scanning QR codes widely available throughout Bali’s commerce and tourism sectors. From local cafés and markets to hotels and cultural sites, QRIS-enabled payments streamline checkout processes and enhance convenience.
Supporting Infrastructure at Bali’s Airport
To facilitate easy adoption of the ITTP, Bank Indonesia has established a Tourism Information Centre at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali’s main gateway. Upon arrival, tourists can visit this center to set up their digital wallets and receive guidance on using the system effectively. Additionally, visitors gain access to the QRIS Nusantara Tourism Guidebook, which lists popular destinations and merchants accepting QRIS payments across the island.
Aims and Benefits of the ITTP Initiative
According to Fillianingsih Hendarta, Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, making transactions easy and seamless is critical to strengthening Indonesia’s position as a visitor-friendly destination. The new payment system is intended to:
- Reduce the time tourists spend searching for currency exchange counters,
- Eliminate the confusion over diverse payment systems,
- Enable more transparent and faster transactions for businesses, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs),
- Foster financial inclusion for local vendors by encouraging cashless payments.
As Bali continues to attract millions of visitors annually, the ITTP represents a strategic move to modernize the island’s tourism economy and keep pace with global trends in mobile-based spending.
Growing Adoption of Cashless Payments in Bali
The transition to digital payments is already well underway in Bali. In the first half of 2025, nearly one million merchants across the island began accepting QRIS payments. This includes not only businesses in busy tourist precincts but also rural shops, temple stalls, and independent kiosks in cultural hubs such as Ubud and Penglipuran. The widespread acceptance of QRIS supports a consistent payment experience for travelers and empowers local communities to participate more confidently in tourism-driven commerce.
Cross-Border Convenience for Asian Tourists
International visitors from countries like China, Japan, and Singapore benefit from the system’s cross-border QRIS compatibility. Their existing digital wallets can be linked for effortless payments, making Bali an even more attractive destination for frequent travelers accustomed to cashless transactions.
The Future of Travel in Bali
As digital payments become the norm worldwide, Bali’s adoption of the ITTP and QRIS technologies signals a broader commitment to creating a more effortless, modern travel experience. Tourists can expect more convenient days at the beach, smoother shopping excursions, and easier access to cultural events without the hassle of managing multiple currencies or payment methods.
By embracing a digital-first approach, Bali reinforces its reputation as one of Asia’s premier travel destinations, ready for the evolving expectations of the global tourism community.
