Tourist Dies and Several Hospitalized in Suspected Poisoning Incident at Bali Hostel

A tragic incident unfolded at a backpacker hostel in Bali, Indonesia, where a 25-year-old tourist died and multiple others were hospitalized following a suspected food poisoning event. The victim, identified as Deqing Zhuoga from China, became violently ill after attending a communal dinner at the Clandestino Hostel in the popular coastal village of Canggu.

Circumstances Leading to Death

Reports indicate that Zhuoga experienced intense vomiting and chills shortly after the communal meal. Hostel staff noticed her condition and arranged for her transport to a nearby clinic late at night on September 1. Despite receiving initial treatment, her health deteriorated, and she was found deceased in the early hours of September 2. According to local authorities, the cause of death was recorded as acute gastroenteritis and hypovolemic shock. Gastroenteritis involves inflammation spreading from the stomach to the intestines, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Hypovolemic shock is a critical condition resulting from significant fluid or blood loss, leading to organ failure if untreated.

Additional Victims and Symptoms

Zhuoga’s friend and roommate, Leila Li, also suffered from severe symptoms and spent five days in intensive care. Li described her condition as pesticide and food poisoning, with symptoms recurring after initial improvement. She confirmed visiting the medical center three times due to her ongoing illness.

Local reports revealed that over 20 people experienced symptoms consistent with poisoning, with at least ten individuals in critical condition. The victims included travelers from several countries such as Germany, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, and China.

Hostel Conditions and Response

Clandestino Hostel, known for budget accommodations with dormitory-style rooms costing under $9 per night, has faced prior criticism from guests about bedbug infestations. The room where Zhuoga fell ill and died is currently under quarantine as authorities investigate the poisoning cause.

The victim’s family expressed frustration after contacting the hostel for information, only to be told police had not shared details. It was later reported that Zhuoga’s body had been kept in a rural hospital freezer for more than 20 days.

Travelers are advised to exercise caution regarding communal food in shared accommodations and promptly seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
