New Cultural Park in Bali to Celebrate the Island’s Unique Heritage for Tourists
Bali has recently unveiled an exciting new cultural park that aims to deepen visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the island’s rich traditions. Building on the success of renowned attractions like the GWK Cultural Park, local leaders are now focused on developing additional cultural sites that highlight distinctive, location-specific aspects of Balinese life.
Collaboration Between Local Government and Community
The Regent of Badung, Wayan Adi Arnawa, confirmed that the new Mekotek Park is a result of close cooperation between the Badung Regency government and the Munggu Tourism Village community. Regent Arnawa explained, “The construction of this monument aligns with Badung’s vision of creating quality tourism and is a concrete manifestation of preserving traditions, arts, and culture.”
Mekotek: A Unique Cultural Ritual
Mekotek is a traditional ritual unique to Munggu Village, performed to ward off disaster and evil spirits. This ritual has been practiced for generations and represents a meaningful cultural practice specific to the area. By developing Mekotek Park, the community and the regency government plan to offer tourists a gateway to explore Balinese culture and village life on a deeper level, beyond the typical tourist experience.
Funding and Vision for the Park
The development of Mekotek Park was made possible through an investment of IDR 2.4 billion sourced from Badung Regency funds. Regent Arnawa expressed optimism about the park’s potential impact on tourism in Badung and throughout Indonesia. “We appreciate the community’s success in developing their village’s potential. This will be a legacy for our children and grandchildren, improving the quality of life and well-being of the community,” he said.
Educational and Economic Goals
The Regent envisages Mekotek Park as both a cultural attraction and an educational tourism destination. He hopes that school groups and educational tours from across Indonesia and around the world will visit, enabling young people to engage with Balinese heritage firsthand. Furthermore, the park is expected to stimulate local entrepreneurship by providing opportunities for community members to open small businesses, enhancing both livelihoods and the overall tourist experience.
Support from Tourism Officials
Nyoman Ruidarta, Head of the Badung Tourism Office, highlighted the importance of community involvement in tourism development. “Supporting the development of Mekotek Cultural Park is a prime example of how supporting local communities is the root of success in the tourism sector,” he said. Ruidarta also pointed out that the park could serve as a creative economy hub, encouraging cultural industries to flourish.
Location and Attractions of Mekotek Park
Located in Munggu Village near the Tanah Lot Bypass traffic lights, Mekotek Cultural Park features art installations, including striking sculptures, as well as hosting cultural dance performances, traditional rituals, and ceremonies. The permanent centerpiece is a Mekotek-inspired sculpture created by a team of local artists. The idea for this landmark statue dates back to 2013, when community members, artists, and village leaders first proposed the concept.
Local Artist Team Coordinator I Nyoman Ardana commented, “We wanted to create a new landmark for Munggu Village that would put the community on the map. Other villages have iconic statues without unique traditions, like Pererenan’s Gajah Mina statue. We have a tradition—why not represent it with a monument? Now, when people see the Mekotek statue, they immediately know they’ve arrived in Munggu, not just by a banyan tree at an intersection.”
