Indonesia Aims to Make Bali Asia’s Premier Medical Tourism Destination

Jakarta – Indonesia is intensifying its efforts to transform Bali into a leading medical tourism hotspot in Asia, aiming to reduce the number of Indonesians traveling abroad for medical treatment. Central to this ambitious plan is the development of the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a dedicated healthcare and wellness district situated on Bali’s southeastern coastline.

Spanning over 41 hectares, the Sanur Health SEZ is being positioned as Indonesia’s first integrated health tourism destination. The project brings together advanced medical facilities and luxury accommodations to attract both domestic and international patients seeking high-quality healthcare alongside the island’s famed natural beauty and cultural richness.

At the heart of the zone is the newly established Bali International Hospital, the only hospital situated within the SEZ. This state-of-the-art medical center covers an expansive area of more than 67,000 square meters and offers specialized services in key areas such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, hepatology, and orthopedics. The hospital collaborates with medical partners from Australia, Japan, and Singapore to ensure advanced treatment options and internationally recognized standards of care.

Supporting the healthcare facilities will be two landmark five-star hotels designed to enhance patient comfort and experience. The historic Bali Beach Hotel, renowned as the island’s first five-star property dating back to 1966, will be complemented by the Meru Sanur Hotel, a newly developed luxury resort, providing premium accommodation options for medical tourists and their families.

This initiative reflects Indonesia’s strategic prioritization of the medical tourism sector as a vital driver for health innovation, economic growth, and international reputation. By building a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem within Bali, the government aims to curb outbound medical tourism, retain patients domestically, and position Bali as a premier destination for those seeking both wellness and medical treatment in Asia.

The Sanur Health SEZ promises to elevate Bali’s status beyond a famed leisure and cultural hotspot to a center of medical excellence, blending expert healthcare with the island’s unique tourism appeal. The development is expected to attract visitors from across the region and worldwide, reinforcing Bali’s standing on the global medical tourism map.
