Bali Tourists Urged to Prioritize Safety When Exploring Island’s Natural Wonders

October 31, 2025 – Authorities in Bali are raising urgent safety warnings for tourists as recent incidents highlight the risks associated with exploring the island’s natural attractions. Following two serious rescue missions within a single week, security and rescue agencies are emphasizing the importance of caution and preparedness when visiting Bali’s scenic sites.

Rescue Operations at Banyumala Waterfall

The first incident occurred on the morning of Friday, October 24th, at the Banyumala Waterfall in North Bali. According to First Inspector Yohana Rosalin Diaz, Public Relations Chief of the Buleleng Police, a Russian tourist slipped from a rock, falling approximately five meters. The accident resulted in leg injuries and a suspected spinal injury.

Inspector Diaz clarified details surrounding the incident after some misinformation circulated online, explaining, “The tourist did not fall from a cliff but slipped on a rock.” She confirmed that emergency responders, alongside eyewitnesses and tourism staff, quickly assisted the injured tourist. Within an hour, she was evacuated to Semara Ratih Hospital in Tabanan for medical treatment.

Tour operators and local authorities urge visitors to abide by all safety instructions while at the waterfall and to avoid taking unnecessary risks in the area.

Insurance and Emergency Preparedness

In light of such incidents, officials stress the necessity for tourists to maintain comprehensive travel and health insurance before traveling to Bali. Additionally, visitors should familiarize themselves with the scope of their insurance coverage, including the claims process. Having insurance contact details readily available in day bags or wallets can be vital, as medical treatment often requires confirmation of insurance coverage before being administered.

Incident at Atuh Beach, Nusa Penida

A second serious accident happened on Tuesday, October 28th, at Atuh Beach on Nusa Penida island. A 58-year-old American tourist, identified only by her initials AW, slipped and fell roughly five meters from the cliffside, breaking her left arm. Medical personnel from the Nusa Medika Clinic responded promptly to provide immediate care.

Due to the challenging terrain and narrow, uneven stairway access to the beach, the evacuation required assistance from the Joint Search and Rescue (SAR) Team. Cakra Negara, Coordinator of the Nusa Penida SAR Alert Unit, reported that six SAR officers, together with local police, Indonesian Navy personnel, village representatives, and AW’s relatives, helped carry her on a stretcher along the steep route for approximately one kilometer.

The injured tourist was successfully transported to the clinic for further treatment by 6 pm on the day of the incident.

Safety Measures and Tourist Warnings

Nusa Penida Police Chief AKP I Ketut Kesuma Jaya SH underlined the priority of tourist safety, stating, “We continue to coordinate with management to improve safety measures and enhance warning signs on steep stairways such as at Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach.” He emphasized the importance of these steps to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Final Advice to Visitors

With Bali being renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes, the recent incidents underscore the need for visitors to exercise awareness and caution. Tourists planning to explore Bali’s waterfalls, cliffs, and beaches are strongly encouraged to follow all safety protocols, remain vigilant of their surroundings, and prioritize their well-being while enjoying the island’s unique attractions.
