Severe Flooding in Bali Claims Nine Lives and Disrupts Travel in Beloved Tourist Destination
Bali, Indonesia – Devastating floods caused by relentless heavy rains between Tuesday evening and Wednesday have resulted in the deaths of at least nine people and affected around 600 residents on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali. The severe weather event has also caused significant disruptions to travel and infrastructure in one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist destinations.
According to Abdul Muhari, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, five of the fatalities occurred in Bali’s capital city, Denpasar. Additional casualties were reported in the Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung regions, with four people losing their lives and two others still reported missing as rescue operations continue.
The uncontrolled floods not only claimed lives but also displaced nearly 200 people. These residents were evacuated to safer locations, including local schools and mosques, as their homes remained submerged under floodwaters. The situation has raised serious concerns about the safety of vulnerable communities throughout the island.
The floods inflicted further damage by bringing down two buildings in Denpasar, as reported by I Nyoman Sidakarya, head of Bali’s search and rescue agency. The destruction added to the challenges faced by emergency personnel working tirelessly to aid affected populations.
Travel in and around Bali has been severely impacted by the flooding. Particularly affected is access to Ngurah Rai International Airport, located near Denpasar, where road conditions have deteriorated to the extent that only trucks have been able to pass. Social media footage has captured images of major roadways submerged and gridlocked, reflecting the broader transportation challenges facing the island amid the ongoing recovery efforts.
Authorities remain engaged in rescue and relief missions to assist those affected and to restore normalcy to Bali’s flood-stricken communities. The disaster underscores the vulnerability of even well-prepared tourist hotspots to sudden extreme weather events and highlights the pressing need for resilient infrastructure and emergency response capabilities.
