Is Bali Safe for Tourists Amid Widespread Protests in Indonesia?

As Indonesia experiences a wave of massive protests sweeping across its major cities, concerns have intensified among potential visitors about the safety of traveling to key destinations such as Bali. Despite the unrest, officials on the Indonesian resort island have assured tourists that Bali remains a safe and peaceful getaway.

Over the past weekend, Indonesia’s largest cities were the scenes of large-scale demonstrations triggered by viral footage showing a motorcycle taxi driver being run over by a police tactical vehicle during earlier rallies. Protesters decried low wages and privileged financial perks for lawmakers, leading to clashes that turned violent in some locations and, tragically, resulted in at least eight fatalities.
In response, multiple foreign embassies have issued updated travel advisories warning of potential disruptions and urging caution. The Australian Embassy, in particular, released a notice Saturday cautioning about ongoing demonstrations in several major cities, including Denpasar, the capital of Bali province. The warning highlighted risks of violence and property damage, and recommended Australians avoid protest areas, stay informed via local media, and prepare for traffic interruptions.
Bali Officials Affirm Safety and Stability
Despite these developments on the mainland, Bali’s local authorities emphasize that the island remains largely unaffected and tranquil. Putu Winastra, chairman of the Indonesian Travel Agencies Association, told the Bali Post that the travel warnings are routine notifications about unfolding events, not travel bans. "It’s merely a reminder and a call for caution," he explained. "I have reassured contacts abroad, including an agent in Spain, that Bali is safe."
Winastra also noted no significant cancellations or drop in tourist arrivals have been observed since the protests began, suggesting confidence in Bali’s security among international visitors.
Strong Security Presence on the Island
Demonstrating their commitment to maintaining public order, Balinese Governor Wayan Koster coordinated a large-scale assembly on Monday involving thousands of security personnel at Niti Mandala Renon Field in Denpasar. This display underscored the government’s proactive stance on ensuring safety for both residents and tourists alike, according to reports by the South China Morning Post.
Tourism’s Vital Role in Bali’s Economy
Tourism constitutes over half of Bali’s economic activity, with the island welcoming 6.3 million foreign tourists last year, as per The Jakarta Post. International visitors are integral to Bali’s vibrancy and livelihoods, with Australians comprising the largest share—23% of foreign tourists in May 2025, according to the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics.
