Bali Authorities Conduct Spot Checks on Tourists Amid Crackdown on Visa Overstays
Tourists visiting Bali, Indonesia, including many British travelers, are now facing random identity checks on some of the island’s most popular beaches and tourist areas. This heightened enforcement effort by local authorities comes as part of a broader crackdown on visa overstays and illegal immigration, which has seen a marked rise in cases since early 2025. ### Spot Checks on Beaches and Tourist Hotspots
Visitors enjoying Bali’s famed beaches, such as those in Nusa Dua, are being approached by immigration officials conducting spot checks. These officers require tourists to show their passports or valid residency permits (known locally as ‘kitas’) as proof of their legal status in the country. The checks are carried out by a newly formed Bali Immigration Patrol Task Force, a 100-strong team deployed across ten key tourist destinations including Canggu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Ubud, Kuta, Sanur, Benoa, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, and Bingin.
Officials performing the checks are identifiable by their high-visibility jackets and body cameras. Video footage shared on social media shows visitors on Nusa Dua beach being questioned about their reasons for visiting Bali and their length of stay. Some tourists who did not have proper documentation with them were warned but allowed to continue their holidays.
Crackdown on Visa Overstays and Digital Nomads
The increase in enforcement is largely in response to a surge in visa overstays, a significant portion of which involve digital nomads who have been taking advantage of Bali’s relaxed lifestyle and picturesque environment while working remotely. Indonesian authorities are aiming to ensure that all foreign nationals adhere strictly to immigration regulations to preserve the island’s integrity and compliance with national laws.
Those found to be overstaying their visas may face severe consequences, including financial penalties exceeding £50 per day, imprisonment, and deportation.
Mixed Reactions from Tourists and the Public
The immigration checks have drawn criticism and concern from travelers and social media users. Many express frustration at having their vacations disrupted by checks away from official entry points such as airports. Comments highlight that passport inspections on beaches or while cycling can be intrusive, with some fearing that it might deter tourists from returning to Bali.
The question of practicality has also been raised — for example, whether surfers and beachgoers are expected to carry passports while engaging in their activities.
