Bali Immigration Police Equipped with Bodycams to Enhance Tourist Law Enforcement
August 19, 2025 — In response to a rising number of immigration offenses and unruly behavior among tourists, Bali’s Immigration Police have taken a significant step to bolster law enforcement and public safety by equipping their officers with body cameras. This new initiative aims to improve accountability and ensure a rapid response to incidents involving foreign visitors on the popular Indonesian island.
Addressing the Challenges of Growing Tourism
Bali continues to be a top international travel destination, attracting millions of visitors annually from countries including Australia, throughout Asia, Russia, Europe, and the United States. In 2024 alone, Indonesia welcomed approximately 13.74 million foreign tourists, with Bali receiving about 6.3 million visitors—surpassing the island’s resident population of 4.3 million. Tourism revenue contributed significantly to Indonesia’s economy, reaching US$16.7 billion and accounting for 4% of the country’s GDP.
The government’s tourism ministry has set an ambitious target of up to 16 million foreign visitors in 2025, with around 6.5 million expected specifically in Bali. However, alongside this influx, a marked increase in immigration violations and criminal activities involving tourists has been observed, prompting authorities to take stringent measures.
Increased Deportations and Detentions
Statistics reveal that between November and December 2024, Indonesian authorities deported 607 foreigners and detained another 303 nationwide. These figures surged considerably from January through July 2025, with 2,669 deportations and 2,009 detentions, Bali notably recording a sharp rise in such cases.
The Immigration Patrol Task Force and New Technology
To tackle these challenges, Bali’s Immigration Department has formed a dedicated task force consisting of 100 officers. This unit is assigned to patrol ten major tourism hotspots, including renowned areas such as Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, Jimbaran, and Kuta—regions that see heavy visitor foot traffic and are frequently associated with tourist misconduct.
The officers will conduct patrols using official immigration vehicles and motorcycles, dressed in safety vests fitted with body cameras. These devices provide real-time recording of interactions, enhancing transparency and accountability during inspections or confrontations. Patrols will be scheduled both periodically and randomly to prevent predictability and ensure comprehensive coverage.
This visible presence aims to deter lawbreaking, help maintain public order, and safeguard Balinese cultural values. The officers are empowered to swiftly act against tourists who violate laws, disrupt peace, or disrespect local customs.
Broader Efforts to Regulate Tourist Behavior
In addition to the deployment of the Immigration Patrol Task Force, Bali’s governor introduced new guidelines earlier in April 2025 designed to regulate tourist conduct more effectively. These “Do’s and Don’ts” highlight the importance of respecting local traditions and laws and signal a firm stance against “naughty” tourist behavior.
Moreover, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport has increased the number of immigration and security officers on patrol. Authorities are now conducting 24/7 patrols to further prioritize safety and comfort for travelers and local residents alike.
Recognizing language barriers as potential impediments to effective law enforcement and tourist assistance, dozens of police officers in Bali are receiving English language training. This initiative is intended to improve communication in tourism hotspots, thereby enhancing service quality and conflict resolution.
Bali’s proactive approach combining technological upgrades with stricter enforcement protocols underlines its commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for visitors while preserving the island’s cultural integrity. The enhanced role of the Immigration Patrol Task Force is expected to play a crucial part in managing the challenges brought by increasing tourist numbers and to protect the reputation of Bali as a premier travel destination.
