A powerful eruption from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, has caused major disruptions in Bali’s air traffic, with 32 flights cancelled through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.
According to Wahyudi, Acting General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport, the cancellations — recorded as of 09:30 WITA on Wednesday — included 17 departures and 15 arrivals, affecting both domestic and international routes.
Among the cancelled international departures were flights to Singapore (3), Melbourne (2), Brisbane (2), Adelaide, Sydney, Pudong, Auckland, and Delhi. On the arrival side, international flights from Melbourne (3), Brisbane (2), Adelaide, Sydney, Perth, Singapore, Darwin, Shanghai, Auckland, and Delhi were also grounded.
Domestically, flights to and from Labuan Bajo and Semarang were cancelled.
In response, airlines are offering flexible options such as refunds, rebookings, or rerouting. The airport has also activated a help desk and provided resting areas and basic necessities for stranded passengers.
The eruption, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, sent an ash plume up to 10 kilometers into the sky, with volcanic ash blanketing parts of Ende Regency. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, urging travelers to check with airlines for updates before heading to the airport.
