Tragic Boat Capsize in Bali Claims Life of Australian Woman
In a heartbreaking incident off Indonesia’s resort island of Bali, a boat carrying 16 people capsized in rough waters, resulting in the death of an Australian woman and injuries to at least one other passenger, authorities reported on Saturday.
The ill-fated vessel, named the Sea Dragon 2, was en route to Nusa Penida, a popular destination renowned for its stunning underwater scenery, when disaster struck on Friday morning. According to police officials, the boat was caught by a massive wave that threw a 39-year-old woman, identified as Anna Maree, overboard. This was soon followed by a second wave, which ultimately resulted in the boat capsizing in the turbulent waters of Kelingking.
Authorities, including the island’s police chief, Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta, confirmed that the group comprised mainly of tourists, with 11 individuals from Australia among the passengers. Following the capsizing, a nearby boat promptly responded to the emergency, rescuing all individuals from the water.
Among the rescued, two people were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, one of these individuals, Anna Maree, was pronounced dead upon arrival, while another tourist was treated for a burn injury sustained during the incident.
In the wake of the tragedy, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement affirming that it is providing consular services to the family of the deceased and confirmed that at least two Australians had suffered injuries in the accident.
As investigations continue into the details surrounding the incident, local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that the affected families receive the necessary support during this difficult time. The loss underscores the dangers associated with maritime activities in the region, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds, and local agencies work to improve safety measures for tourists navigating the beautiful but sometimes perilous waters around Bali.
