Bali Police Arrest Three UK Nationals for Drug Trafficking
Denpasar, Bali – The Bali Regional Police have taken significant action against drug trafficking by arresting three individuals from the United Kingdom, associated with an estimated Rp6 billion (approximately USD 8,368) worth of illegal narcotics. The suspects, identified as JC, LE, and PA, were apprehended as part of an ongoing investigation into an international drug ring.
Arrest Details
In a press conference held on Friday, Adjunct Grand Commissioner Ponco Indriyo, the deputy director of the Narcotics Investigation Directorate, outlined the details of the operation. The initial arrests took place on Saturday, February 1, at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, where JC, 37, and LE, 39, arrived after transiting through Doha, Qatar.
During routine inspections, customs officers conducted an X-ray examination of their belongings, revealing hidden contraband inside their suitcases. Authorities reported that JC was carrying approximately 637.12 grams of a white powder, suspected to be a Class 1 drug, concealed within 10 plastic packages of various flavors of the popular dessert Angel Delight.
In addition, LE had seven packages containing a total of 443.10 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine. These finds prompted officers to detain both suspects for further investigation at the airport customs office.
Further Developments
Following the initial arrests, the provincial police launched a controlled delivery operation on Monday, February 3. This operation successfully led to the apprehension of a third suspect, PA, aged 31, in the Tuban area of Badung District, Bali.
Indriyo disclosed that the three UK nationals had attempted to smuggle drugs into Bali on two previous occasions before their latest apprehension. However, specific details regarding these earlier incidents have not been released, as the investigation continues.
Ongoing Investigation
The Bali police are currently following leads regarding an international drug trafficking network reportedly involved in the case. As investigations progress, authorities aim to uncover more information surrounding the broader context of these drug smuggling attempts and to prevent any future incidents.
This recent arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by illegal drug trafficking in tourist destinations like Bali, and the importance of vigilance by local authorities in maintaining safety and security for both residents and visitors.
