Bali Police Arrest Three British Nationals for Cocaine Smuggling
Bali, Indonesia — In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, the Narcotics Directorate of Bali Police announced the arrest of three British nationals involved in allegedly smuggling cocaine into the popular resort island. The arrests were made during separate operations earlier this month, and the suspects have been identified by their initials: JC, 37, LE, 39, and PA, 31.
Arrests Made at Ngurah Rai International Airport
During a press conference held on February 7, 2025, at the Bali Police Headquarters in Denpasar, Commissioner Ponco Indriyo, the Deputy Director of Bali Police’s Anti-Narcotics Unit, provided details about the investigation. According to Commissioner Ponco, the cocaine was brought to Bali by JC and LE, who arrived from the United Kingdom after a stop in Doha.
The smuggling attempt was thwarted when customs and police officials inspected the pair’s luggage at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport around 8 p.m. on February 1. During an X-ray screening, authorities detected irregularities that prompted a closer inspection. Investigators discovered a total of 994.56 grams of cocaine hidden within food packaging labeled ‘Angel Delight.’
In one suitcase, officers recovered 10 plastic packages containing 637.12 grams of the suspected narcotic. A second suitcase yielded seven additional packages weighing 443.10 grams, all believed to be cocaine, classified as a Class 1 narcotic under Indonesian law. Upon uncovering the drugs, JC and LE were promptly detained at the Ngurah Rai Customs Office for further investigation.
Controlled Delivery Leads to Further Arrest
Following the initial arrests, Bali Police executed a controlled delivery of the intercepted drugs. This operation led them to another British national, PA, who was apprehended in the Tuban area of Badung Regency two days later. Police believe PA is linked to the initial suspects, although they have not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of their connection.
Estimated Value and Implications of the Seizure
The total street value of the seized cocaine is estimated at a staggering Rp 6 billion (approximately $368,665). Authorities suspect that this incident is not isolated; Commissioner Ponco indicated that the suspects may have successfully smuggled cocaine into Bali at least twice prior to their apprehension. However, no further information was provided regarding these previous attempts or the operational details that could suggest a broader smuggling network.
Presentation of Suspects at Press Conference
During the press conference, the three suspects were presented before the media, where they displayed contrasting behaviors; notably, JC and PA were seen laughing multiple times, despite the serious nature of their charges.
The arrest of these British nationals underscores Bali’s ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling, particularly as the island remains a popular destination for tourists from around the globe. The situation serves as a critical reminder of the stringent anti-drug policies enforced in Indonesia, where drug offenses carry severe penalties.
As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant in addressing narcotics-related crimes, aiming to maintain safety and security within the tourist hotspot.
