Discovering Amed: Bali’s Hidden Gem

While many travelers flock to Bali’s bustling hotspots like Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, those searching for a more authentic experience may find themselves drawn to Amed. With its serene landscapes, rich culture, and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, Amed is a refreshing throwback to a less commercialized Bali.

A Unique Arrival

Landing at Denpasar International Airport at midnight, I was relieved to have organized a pre-booked transfer to Amed. Situated a good two-and-a-half-hour drive northeast from the airport, the sleepy fishing village welcomed me with a quiet charm as my taxi rolled into town.

By the time I arrived at 3 AM, Amed’s narrow main street was tranquil, bathed in moonlight. The gentle crash of waves mingled with the sound of my suitcase rolling over gravel as I made my way to my accommodation, a modest beach bungalow at Tambun Sari Beach Homestay. Priced at just $45 a night, it was a steal compared to the high prices prevalent in Bali’s more tourist-driven areas.

Amed’s Lush Backdrop

Nestled in the shadow of Mount Agung, Bali’s most active volcano, Amed stands apart from the mainstream tourist circuit. The village might not attract the crowds, perhaps due to its close proximity to the volcano or its black volcanic beaches, but the majestic silhouette of Mount Agung towering over the horizon is a sight to behold.

Accommodation with Character

At my homestay, I found both comfort and simplicity in my surroundings. The 26-square-meter bungalow featured glossy white tiles, a four-poster bed, and a semi-outdoor bathroom—where I soon learned small crabs often made their home.

As dawn broke, the residents of Amed began their day. The crowing of roosters filled the air, complemented by the sound of fishermen venturing out on their motorized outrigger canoes, known as “jukung.” These intricately-designed boats resembled giant spiders gliding across the coastline, setting the scene for a classic Balinese morning.

Snorkeling and Diving Adventures

Amed is renowned for its world-class diving and snorkeling opportunities. Just off the pebbly shore lies the famous USAT Liberty shipwreck in nearby Tulamben Bay. With crystal clear waters and thriving coral gardens, I couldn’t resist joining the local dive operator, Dream Divers Bali, to explore this WWII-era wreck.

As I descended into the water, I was mesmerized by the colorful corals cloaking the 130-meter-long wreck. Schools of stingrays, groupers, and turtles danced through the submerged metal, making for an unforgettable underwater experience. For those who prefer snorkeling, the nearby Japanese Wreck can also be explored, providing an equally captivating experience just below the surface.

A Taste of Amed

After a day of adventure, Amed quiets down, offering a relaxed vibe that contrasts sharply with other parts of Bali. My evening plan involved indulging in the local delicacy, nasi goreng, at Wawa-Wewe, a beachside bar and restaurant where live music enhanced the laid-back atmosphere.

As luck would have it, I stumbled upon a small community fair on my way back to my bungalow. Vibrant stalls filled with street food vendors caught my eye, especially one vendor grilling chicken satay. I eagerly ordered six skewers, wrapped in paper. It was a simple yet delicious experience that encapsulated the essence of Bali I had been craving.
