Kura-kura Bali Special Economic Zone Aims for Job Creation in Major Infrastructure Project
Denpasar, Bali – PT Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID), the management company behind the Kura-kura Bali Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Serangan Island, has set ambitious goals centered around employment and infrastructure development with the planned construction of an international marina beginning in April 2025. The project, which is expected to be the first of its kind in the region, aims to create a significant number of job opportunities for the local workforce.
Employment Projections
According to Zakki Hakim, the Head of Communication for PT BTID, the long-term vision for the Kura-kura Bali SEZ includes creating 30,000 direct jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs over the next 30 years. While the exact number of jobs generated by the marina remains undetermined at this stage, the overall employment targets reflect the project’s potential to boost the local economy significantly.
Construction Timeline and Safety Measures
The commencement of construction will coincide with new safety measures as the project progresses. Zakki indicated that state and local authorities are aware of the potential dangers associated with hefty construction equipment near the water. "If the government and related agencies are supportive, the quicker PT BTID can build, residents will naturally avoid the areas where heavy machinery is operating," he stated.
As construction begins, specific areas of the sea will be temporarily restricted to ensure the safety of nearby residents and workers. Local fishermen will still have access to certain areas to continue their activities, emphasizing the project’s commitment to community engagement and support.
The Marina’s Features and Potential Impact
Once completed, the marina is expected to accommodate between 120 and 140 luxury cruise ships, contributing to Bali’s status as a tourist hotspot. Although there are currently no booking requests, potential customers eagerly await the project’s completion. Zakki noted that the Kura-kura Bali SEZ will serve as an integrated hub with various facilities designed to enhance visitor experiences.
He also highlighted that the marina’s global standards will include customs and immigration facilities, turning the area into a focal point for tourism and transportation that complements local businesses.
Collaboration with Local Industries
The development of the marina also signals an opportunity for collaboration with local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Zakki referred to existing businesses in the ship repair industry in Serangan, indicating that increased activity and facilities could stimulate growth in these sectors. "With an international marina coming, and existing ship repair industries, Serangan will function like a domestic airport supporting the broader tourism infrastructure," he remarked.
Regulatory Oversight
The construction and ongoing operation of the marina will be regulated by the Harbor Master Office (KSOP) under Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation, with PT BTID acting as the area manager. This regulatory oversight aims to ensure that operations remain safe and aligned with national maritime standards.
As the Kura-kura Bali SEZ moves forward with its transformative plans, local communities, investors, and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the project unfolds, with hopes for significant economic benefits and a boost to Bali’s tourism sector.
