In a dramatic maritime incident off the coast of Nusa Penida, a tourist boat carrying 89 passengers capsized after being struck by strong waves near Lembongan waters on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The incident occurred around 4:30 PM local time, just moments after the vessel departed Tanjung Sanghyang Pier en route to Sanur, Bali.

According to Bali Police spokesperson Kombes Ariasandy, all passengers—77 foreigners and 12 Indonesians—were successfully evacuated without injuries or fatalities. “The evacuation process was completed by 6:30 PM. All passengers are safe, with no casualties,” he confirmed.

The boat, The Tanis, which has a seating capacity of 125, was reportedly reversing away from the dock when a large wave struck its stern, causing the vessel to tilt left and capsize just meters from shore. Local residents and boat staff quickly responded, aided by two divers who ensured no one was trapped underwater.

Safety Reminder for Visitors

While Bali remains a top tourist destination, this incident highlights the importance of safety protocols, especially during transitional weather or rough sea conditions. If you’re planning inter-island trips in Bali, always check weather forecasts and prioritize operators that follow strict safety standards.
