In celebration of the 73rd Indonesian Independence Day, Surakarta in Central Java is set to showcase the Adeging Nagari colossal opera on Saturday. Taking place on Jl. Sudirman, the show will reportedly involve around 200 dancers, musicians and theater performers.

Surakarta tourism head Hasta Gunawan said the performers came from Moncar Iswara Studio, Dedek Gamelan Orchestra, Artaxiad Gamelan Orchestra as well as consisted of junior and senior high school students.

The opera will showcase the country’s journey toward independence through four acts, namely the Palapa Oath taken by Gajah Mada in the 14th century, the Youth Pledge, the Dutch colonization and Japanese occupation in Indonesia and the proclamation of independence.

The opera’s director Agung Kusumo said the four historical moments proved that Indonesia is a great nation.   He also explained that several performers would play important characters, such as Gajah Mada and Tribhuana Tunggadewi during the Palapa Oath scene, as well as Fatmawati, Sayuti Melik, Achmad Subarjdo, Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta during the proclamation scene.
