Date Published: April 5, 2025

In a concerning turn of events for tourists visiting Bali, local police in Kuta have confirmed the arrest of a 15-year-old Balinese boy, known by his initials WPI, following a violent robbery targeting an Indian family. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the family was returning to their hotel after a meal in the popular beach resort area.

Incident Details

Reports indicate that while walking along Jalan Pudak Sari, WPI approached the couple and, despite their presence of a young child, forcibly grabbed a gold necklace from the woman’s neck. Witnesses say the woman’s husband shouted for help as the incident unfolded, prompting nearby residents to intervene. They quickly chased WPI, who was using a Honda PCX motorcycle for his escape.

Local authorities responded promptly to the incident, successfully apprehending the suspect and recovering the stolen jewelry. During questioning, WPI confessed to the robbery, revealing that he intended to sell the necklace to meet his daily needs. Sources indicate that this was not his first offense; the teenager admitted to having committed four similar thefts in the Kuta area prior to this incident.

Rising Crime Concerns

The arrest comes amid growing concerns about the safety of tourists in Bali, particularly in Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak, where there has been a noticeable increase in violent robberies and muggings in recent months. This surge has led local officials to issue updated safety advisories for visitors, highlighting the need for vigilance while exploring the island’s nightlife.

Kuta’s Chief of Police, AKP Agus Riwayanto Diputra, confirmed the alarming nature of these incidents. Referring to previous cases, he stated, "The suspect forcibly pulled a gold necklace containing a 22-carat pendant worth AUD 360 from the victim, which broke off during the altercation." Police further indicated that swift investigative efforts allowed them to locate WPI at a boarding house in Kuta, along with the evidence of his crime, including clothing, his motorcycle, and a fake license plate.

Safety Measures for Tourists

In response to the rising crime rate, authorities have initiated additional security measures, especially with the Lebaran holiday period approaching. Operation Ketupat Agung 2025, a nationwide effort, has been implemented to bolster public safety, resulting in more visible police presence across Bali’s top tourist areas until April 8, 2025. Despite these measures, tourists remain concerned about safety during their visits. AKP Diputra urged visitors to stay vigilant and avoid displaying valuables, particularly gold jewelry and high-end technology like smartphones. To enhance personal safety, tourists are encouraged to utilize trusted taxi services for nighttime travel and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. In cases of theft, rapid reporting to local police and seeking consular assistance are advised.
