Traditional Balinese Weaving Takes Center Stage at Fashion Show
Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) — The National Craft Council of Bali (Dekranasda) has unveiled the Wastra Citta Jagadhita fashion show as part of a campaign to elevate traditional Balinese weaving, or ‘wastra,’ to contemporary fashion trends for the year. This initiative aims to inspire the local community to embrace clothing made from traditional Balinese woven fabrics.
Ida Mahendra Jaya, the Acting Chairperson of Dekranasda Bali, expressed hopes that this fashion event will significantly influence public interest in traditional woven garments. ‘We hope this show will encourage more people to appreciate clothing made from Balinese traditional woven fabrics,’ Jaya stated during an announcement in Denpasar on Saturday.
Showcasing Local Talent
The fashion show featured 139 clothing designs showcasing wastra, crafted by 13 young Balinese designers. According to Jaya, the primary goal of the event is not only to promote but also to preserve Balinese traditional fabrics, which are regarded as invaluable cultural heritage. ‘This event aims to conserve and promote the wealth of traditional Balinese fabrics, which we know as wastra, as part of our priceless cultural heritage,’ Jaya added.
Supporting Young Designers
Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, the Acting Governor of Bali, echoed support for Dekranasda’s mission to foster creativity among young Balinese designers. He emphasized the timely occurrence of the fashion show at the beginning of the year, stating that it presents a unique opportunity for Balinese textiles to gain wider recognition and for local designers to reach a broader audience.
“I am pleased that this event takes place at the beginning of 2025, which will help position our designers’ creativity at the forefront of fashion trends for this year, both locally and beyond,” he remarked. The governor committed to protecting, preserving, and promoting Bali’s rich cultural heritage, including wastra fabrics.
A Bright Future for Balinese Culture
With his wealth of experience as a former advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mahendra Jaya expressed confidence in the incoming Governor Wayan Koster, who also attended the fashion show. He believes that Koster shares a strong commitment to cultural preservation, assuring that Bali’s cultural legacy will thrive under his leadership.
“I am convinced that Bali will continue to flourish, and that Balinese culture will not only be preserved but will also thrive magnificently under his guidance,” Mahendra Jaya affirmed.
As local Indonesian culture continues to find new expressions in fashion, the Wastra Citta Jagadhita event serves as a reminder of Balinese heritage, showcasing the beauty and versatility of traditional textiles in contemporary design.
