Indonesian Ministry of Tourism Condemns Extortion of Tourists at Top Destinations

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism has publicly denounced reports of tourist extortion occurring in popular destinations within the country, escalating concerns as tourism gradually expands beyond the well-trodden paths of Bali. Deputy Minister for Tourism, Ni Luh Puspa, convened an urgent online meeting with key stakeholders after incidents of extortion were reported in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara—a region witnessing a spike in international visitors eager to explore more of Indonesia’s diverse offerings.

Rising Popularity of Sumba

With Bali being Indonesia’s most prominent tourism hotspot, the government is actively promoting lesser-known regions like Sumba to diversify its tourism appeal. Sumba, known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, is beginning to attract the attention of tourists. However, the recent surge in visitors has revealed underlying challenges, particularly concerning tourist safety and ethical interactions with local communities.

Reports surfaced when popular YouTuber "Jajago Keliling Indonesia" shared a troubling experience while visiting Sumba’s Jalan Poros Tengah Ratenggaro, close to Ratenggaro Beach. In a video, the Youtuber, along with his partner, detailed how local youths approached them under the guise of offering photography services in exchange for money. What began as a simple request turned into an overwhelming situation, with multiple individuals demanding donations and additional support, prompting an outcry for authority intervention.

Ministry’s Response

Deputy Minister Puspa stressed the importance of creating a secure and enjoyable environment for tourists at all destinations in Indonesia. She acknowledged the responsibility of local communities and urged tourism stakeholders to join forces in counteracting these negative behaviors. During the meeting, she stated, "We all share the same commitment to ensure that practices like extortion do not take place. This is a collective effort to cultivate a safe and rewarding tourist experience."

The Ministry of Tourism has expressed its support for local governments in implementing measures against extortion, ensuring that those who attempt to exploit tourists are held accountable. Nevertheless, Puspa emphasized the need for a proactive, compassionate approach, particularly towards local children in tourist areas. She advised that tourists should avoid directly giving gifts or donations to children, advocating instead for coordinated efforts with local organizations to ensure aid is distributed appropriately.

Call for Improved Awareness and Management

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister highlighted that the Ministry will collaborate with various tourism offices to enhance the local communities’ capacity in managing destinations and improving tourism awareness. "It’s crucial that we build quality tourism in Sumba and its surrounding areas that is both orderly and inclusive," Puspa remarked, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in tourism development.

Local government officials have echoed these sentiments. Ratu Ngadu Bonu Wulla, the Regent of Southwest Sumba, spoke to reporters affirming his government’s commitment to address these extortion issues decisively. He mentioned that steps are being taken to improve tourist experience by implementing clear pricing information at key locations, including Ratenggaro Traditional Village. Plans include installing information boards that outline the costs of various activities, ensuring transparency and compliance with village regulations.

Community Responsibility

Wulla also committed to deploying local enforcement measures, teaming up with police and military forces to supervise tourist areas effectively. He reiterated that the actions of individuals engaging in extortion were against community values and norms, labelling such behavior as "shameful."
