Restoration Efforts Set to Begin at Ubud Art Market After Devastating Fire
Fire Causes Extensive Damage
Leaders in Ubud have confirmed that funds will be allocated for the restoration and reconstruction of the Ubud Art Market, which suffered significant damage from a fire in August 2024. The inferno, which blazed for over 10 hours, affected more than 1,000 traders, resulting in the destruction of 400 businesses located on the basement and ground floors of the landmark building. The fire was noted to be one of the worst Ubud had experienced in decades, and many were saddened by the loss since the Ubud Art Market had only recently reopened following a previous fire.
Government Action and Funding
Ni Luh Gede Eka Suary, Head of the Gianyar Trade and Industry Service, spoke to reporters about the funding for the repair work. “The repair work on the Ubud Art Market after it burned down will utilize provincial budget (APBD) funds, not the central budget,” she stated. The repair efforts will be managed by government contractors through the Department of Public Works and Public Housing, under the coordination of the Gianyar Regency Government.
Suary further explained, “This is still in process with the 2025 budget, primarily focusing on the restoration of the East Building of the Ubud Art Market, which was directly affected by the fire.” Tourists visiting Ubud in 2025 can expect to witness restoration efforts as they unfold; however, due to the extensive size of the market structure, construction activities are not anticipated to hinder visitors’ shopping experiences.
The Ubud Art Market Experience
Situated in the heart of Ubud, the Ubud Art Market continues to be a cherished destination for tourists exploring Bali’s vibrant arts and culture scene. Visitors can find a wide range of unique items, including traditional Balinese sarongs, handcrafted wooden ornaments, jewelry, and affordable souvenirs. The market not only offers a shopping experience but allows tourists to discover items rich with sentiment and cultural narratives.
While the Ubud Art Market remains the primary spot for many vendors, the fire has led some stallholders to create informal stalls across Ubud. A frequently visited impromptu market can be found opposite the Jalan Tirta Tawar intersection off Jalan Raya Ubud, where locals have established informal setups. In addition, an intriguing market can be discovered along the lane leading to the Juwuk Manis Rice Field Walk, where visitors can browse goods ranging from teas and soaps to sunglasses and dreamcatchers.
Boutique Shopping and Cultural Attractions
For those seeking a more boutique shopping experience, Ubud offers an array of independent shops along Jalan Goutama and Jalan Monkey Forest. Here, tourists can find designer pieces and artisanal souvenirs that showcase the region’s craftsmanship.
Ubud shopping is further enhanced by cultural experiences, with the stunning Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung) located directly across from the Ubud Art Market. This majestic landmark is free to enter and hosts nightly cultural shows, allowing guests to immerse themselves in local traditions. Shows commence at 7:30 PM and tickets are priced at IDR 100,000 each, available for purchase at the venue. While there is no strict dress code, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly when attending events at the palace.
Conclusion
As restoration efforts begin for the Ubud Art Market, the local community and visitors alike remain hopeful for the revival of this integral part of Ubud’s cultural landscape. The market and surrounding areas continue to offer vibrant shopping and unique experiences, showcasing the resilience of Ubud’s artistic community and the enduring appeal of this beautiful destination.
