A solo birthday trip turned disastrous for Lancaster County resident Lauren Dague when the boat she was traveling on in Bali began to sink. What was supposed to be a celebratory occasion for her 24th birthday took a harrowing turn as the vessel filled with water soon after departing from the dock. The boat, overstuffed with tourists, forced passengers to stand in aisles, leaving little room for mobility.

"I just had a gut feeling. I knew something was going to happen," Dague recalled. Unfortunately, her instincts proved right. As the boat progressed further into the ocean, it began taking on water at an alarming rate, unbeknownst to many passengers who were unable to see the flooding occurring in the boat’s rear sections.

The Sinking and Immediate Response

Moments after the boat commenced its journey, a wave crashed against it, tipping the small craft and causing panic among the tourists on board. "We obviously didn’t realize the full extent of what was happening in the back of the boat and how much water was quickly coming in because we couldn’t see it," Dague expressed.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Dague’s quick thinking emerged as a savior. As water levels rose to the third row of seats, she began preparing for the worst. "As the water started coming in, I immediately knew I was going out the window if anything happened, because there were too many people," she explained. In a moment of courage, Dague kicked out a window, enabling herself and several other passengers to escape the sinking vessel.

Dague’s decisive action not only ensured her safety but also facilitated the rescue of at least three other individuals. "I was fortunate and lucky to be sitting where I was," she stated. Amidst the chaos, passengers were seen clinging to the sides of the boat as it tilted dangerously.

As people struggled to stay afloat, personal belongings, including bags and equipment, floated in the turbulent waters surrounding the capsizing boat. Dague herself was carrying over $1,000 worth of photography equipment, showcasing her profession as a freelance photographer, and her loss was overshadowed by the significance of the moment.
