Discovering Authentic Bali at Anantara Ubud
Embracing Bali’s Hidden Treasures
After a long absence from Bali, I recently found myself back on this enchanting island, initially apprehensive about what I would encounter. Fears of traffic congestion, unruly tourists, and the rapid commercialization of the cherished culture haunted my thoughts. Much to my relief, my experience was far from the grim scenarios I had envisioned. Instead, I was fortunate enough to uncover the genuine spirit of Bali, nestled within its highlands.
Anantara Ubud: A Luxurious Retreat
My journey led me to the newly opened Anantara Ubud Bali Resort, a luxurious haven set against the stunning backdrop of the central highlands. Although the resort is located near Puhu village — a tranquil area also known as the "abode of the gods" in Sanskrit — it remains about a 40-minute drive from the bustling heart of Ubud. Surrounded by virgin rainforest and scenic views, this resort offers a true sanctuary for those seeking peace and relaxation.
With 85 suites and villas cascading down a steep hillside, Anantara Ubud boasts multiple pools and a range of on-site amenities. Guests can indulge in wellness experiences at the five-room spa, break a sweat at the gym with jungle views, or savor delicious meals at various dining outlets. A particular highlight is the resort’s all-day diner, Kirana, where breakfast options span from laksa and dim sum to smoothie bowls and wellness dishes, all served in an expansive space immersed in the greenery.
A Journey Beyond the Resort
While the luxurious surroundings encourage relaxation, my hosts urged me to venture outside the resort to connect with the rich culture of the region. Made Warnata, the director of spa, wellness, and recreation at Anantara, hails from a neighboring village with roots dating back to the 12th century. His dedication to showcasing the heritage of Payangan adds depth to the resort experience.
One remarkable excursion led me to Mengening Temple, established by a Balinese king in the 11th century. Although the temple itself is off-limits to tourists, Warnata facilitated access to the sacred springs, where beauty abounds in terraced pools, lush flora, and the presence of turtles and koi. As I donned the traditional sarong and sash lent to me by the staff, I felt honored to participate in the serene atmosphere.
Another memorable experience was attending an Agni Hotra fire ceremony, conducted by the high priest of nearby Bukian village. Surrounded by a small group of attendees, we chanted mantras and offered tributes while being purified by holy water, creating an intimate ambiance that left a lasting impression.
Beyond Wellness: A Holistic Experience
During my stay, I explored various aspects of local spirituality and heritage. A visit to Alas Taro, a historical village that dates back to the arrival of Hinduism in Bali, provided insight into the island’s architectural beauty and the significance of its traditions.
Despite the luxurious amenities offered at Anantara — such as the sound-healing sessions and exquisite dining options at Amerta — it was these immersion experiences that enriched my visit. I departed from the Balinese highlands not just physically rejuvenated but also mentally and spiritually uplifted, grateful for the genuine connection to the local culture that Anantara facilitates.
A Return to Authenticity
Anantara Ubud provides a unique lens into Bali’s untouched heritage while still catering to visitors looking for luxury and comfort. For those eager to explore the island at a more profound level, the resort’s excursions allow guests to see beyond the heavily commercialized areas, making it possible to find the "real" Bali that many travelers yearn for. As I reflect on my stay, it is clear that the essence of Bali remains vibrant, ready to be discovered by those who seek it out.
