Tragic Landslide in Klungkung Claims Lives During Meditation Ritual

Klungkung, Bali – A devastating landslide in Dusun Cempaka, Desa Pikat, Kecamatan Dawan, Klungkung, resulted in the deaths of three individuals during a meditation ritual on Sunday, January 19, 2025. The incident was triggered by heavy rain accompanied by lightning that swept across the region in the late afternoon and evening.

According to local sources, approximately eight people had gathered at a site resembling an ashram, located below Bukit Mucung, to participate in the meditation practice when disaster struck. Witnesses reported hearing the ominous sound of large rocks cascading down the hillside, leading to the collapse of the surrounding earth.

Initial reports suggest that the area had previously been excavated for vehicle parking, which may have increased the risk of landslides. As a consequence of this hazard, four individuals were reported to have been buried under the debris, while four others sustained injuries.

Emergency services, including local disaster management officials (BPBD), police, and community members, promptly responded to the scene. The body of one of the deceased was discovered in a poignant position, still gripping a book at the site.

Community Response

I Nyoman Kardana, the acting head of Desa Pikat, confirmed the tragic event and indicated that the information he received from the head of Dusun Cempaka reported three fatalities, with four individuals injured. Kardana noted the prevalence of meditation rituals in the area, particularly on Sundays during the full moon and ‘Tilem’ phases, which tend to attract participants from outside the Desa Pikat community.

“The reports say that three people have lost their lives and four are injured. This location is often used for meditation practices,” he explained. Kardana, who is currently unwell, admitted he was unable to gather complete details about the victims due to his condition. ‘I apologize, but I am still recovering and unable to visit the site, hence why the information remains incomplete,’ he added.

Local residents have confirmed that these meditation rituals typically draw participants from outside the village, with few inhabitants of Desa Pikat engaging in these gatherings.
