Effective Immediately: New Hybrid Application System for Visa Extensions
Bali, Indonesia—In a major shift that impacts tourists and long-stay visitors, the Directorate General of Immigration has announced immediate changes to the visa extension processing system, effective May 29, 2025. This announcement comes in response to increasing concerns over the number of foreigners violating visa conditions and engaging in illegal activities within Indonesia.
New Visa Application Procedure
Under the new regulations detailed in Circular Letter Number IMI-417, GR.01.01 Year 2025, all tourists seeking to extend their visas must now begin the application process with online registration. This is a significant departure from the fully digital visa extension process that was introduced in 2024, allowing tourists to extend their eVisas entirely online.
Steps for Visa Extension:
- Online Registration: Tourists must visit the official Indonesia Immigration website, select ‘extend my visa,’ and follow the on-screen instructions. The portal is user-friendly and is available in English for both mobile and desktop users.
- In-Person Verification: After completing the online form, applicants will be required to visit the nearest immigration office for document verification and biometrics, typically within two working days of registration.
- Walk-In Applications: Visitors can also initiate their visa extension applications through a walk-in process at immigration offices, adhering to the same online prior registration protocol.
Acting Director General of Immigration, Yuldi Yusman, confirmed that this new hybrid system aims to streamline the application process while also providing enhanced monitoring of visa holders.
Continued Security Measures
This change originates from a marked increase in immigration enforcement cases. Between January and April 2024, the Directorate processed 1,610 enforcement actions. However, in the same period in 2025, that number surged to 2,201, reflecting a 36.71% rise in cases of visa violations.
During their visit to the immigration office, applicants may also be questioned regarding their intentions for their stay in Indonesia, including details about their travel plans and financial means. Although additional documentation is not explicitly required, applicants may find it beneficial to have proof of onward travel, residence, and financial support readily available.
Yusman emphasized that priority services will be provided for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, disabled, and pregnant women, assisting them in completing the application process with minimal hassle.
Visa Options for Tourists
For tourists visiting Bali, the most appropriate visas now include the Visa on Arrival (VoA) and the electronic Visa on Arrival (eVoA). The VoA, which costs IDR 500,000, allows visitors to stay for 30 days and can be extended for an additional 30 days under the new rules.
In closing, the Directorate General of Immigration has signaled that more adjustments to visa policies may occur in the future as they continue to combat illegal immigration and ensure compliance with the nation’s regulations.
