Bali Police Initiate Crackdown on Scooter Regulations Amid Rising Tourist Incidents

Bali, Indonesia – Authorities in Bali have launched a steep crackdown on scooter rentals as part of efforts to address rising incidents involving tourists and traffic violations. With scooters being a popular means of transportation for visitors seeking to navigate the island’s congested roads, recent police operations highlight the importance of adherence to local traffic laws.

From May 1 to May 3, Bali Police conducted a targeted enforcement operation focusing on notorious tourist areas such as Canggu, Uluwatu, Kuta, and Seminyak. The initiative aimed to identify and penalize road users who were found driving illegally modified scooters, lacking the correct documentation, or violating Indonesian traffic laws.

During this three-day operation, authorities seized a total of 56 scooters and issued citations to 81 drivers, including 30 foreign tourists. Badung Police Chief AKBP M Arif Batubara stated that the foreign visitors frequently lacked complete vehicle documents and were driving motorcycles modified with non-standard exhausts that created excessive noise.

"Most of the foreigners who are pulled over do not wear helmets, do not have a driver’s license, and operate motorcycles with noisy (non-standard) exhausts that disrupt traffic order," Batubara remarked. This enforcement is a direct response to the disturbances caused by non-compliance with road rules and the necessity for maintaining public safety.

Notably, over 70% of road fatalities in Indonesia involve motorbikes or scooters, according to data from the World Health Organisation.

Tourists are also warned that failing to abide by local traffic regulations can invalidate their insurance claims, leaving them vulnerable to substantial out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an accident.
