Buleleng Regency Takes Steps to Enhance Tourism Revenue
In its latest initiative to boost tourism in the region, the Buleleng Regency in Bali has announced the introduction of official visitor entrance fees at various off-the-beaten-path attractions. This strategic move comes as part of efforts to increase local tourism tax revenue, enabling the government to funnel funds back into improving the region’s amenities and safety for visitors.
Unveiling the New Fees
Teams from the Buleleng Tourism Office have confirmed that certain emerging tourist destinations will soon require an entry fee, reflecting a shift towards more structured tourism management. Gede Dody Sukma Oktiva Askara, the Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, emphasized the need for these fees to align with new regional regulations, stating, "The imposition of regional levies can only be done after being included in the Regional Regulation."
The planned entry fees, which are expected to be modest—generally not exceeding IDR 40,000 (approximately $2.60) per person—are aimed at generating revenue for the region while also enhancing the quality of the tourist experience. “From the tariff imposed later, 25 percent will be deposited into the regional treasury, 75 percent for the manager,” Aksara explained.

This new strategy is part of a broader goal for the Buleleng Regency, which aims to welcome thousands more tourists this year, ultimately boosting its tourism tax revenue target to IDR 7.5 billion, compared to IDR 5 billion in 2024. Payment Options and Transparency
In an effort to streamline the process and ensure transparency, Aksara confirmed that new digital payment options would be available across tourist sites. "We are currently also exploring a number of other tourist attractions to adjust the retribution payments, from conventional to digital, which shows income in real-time," he stated. To facilitate this transition, 20 card readers have already been distributed, with additional devices expected.
The introduction of digital payment systems aims to standardize entry fees, so visitors will know they are receiving a fair rate, regardless of whether they arrive as part of an organized tour or independently. Additional locations include Buyan Gate Lake in Pancasari Village, Tirta Bhuana Waterfall in Pegadungan Village, and several more in Sambangan Village.
