Bali Flight Costs Could Be Discounted As Leaders Propose New Tourism Subsidies

As Bali approaches its peak tourism season, local tourism leaders are advocating for government support to subsidize flight costs. This call to action from the Association of the Indonesian Tours & Travel Agencies (ASITA) could significantly influence both domestic and international visitor numbers to the popular Indonesian destination.
Boosting Tourism through Economic Stimulus
With the island on track to surpass its 2025 tourism targets, ASITA is urging the government to enhance the existing economic stimulus package. Current flight ticket discounts primarily target transportation but have failed to create a direct impact on domestic tourism or benefit international travelers. ASITA’s Chairman, Rusmiati, emphasized the necessity for more comprehensive subsidies that would ensure affordable air travel year-round, not just during specific promotional periods.
Rusmiati remarked, “Airplane tickets [moving] forward can be more affordable in general, not only at certain moments or are temporary. That way, air travel will be more inclusive and have a wide impact on the growth of local tourism.” The organization also seeks tax incentives aimed at fostering Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) activities, which would further invigorate the hospitality sector across Indonesia.
Government Initiatives for Enhanced Connectivity
In a recent announcement, Indonesian Minister of Finance revealed new regulations aimed at reducing domestic flight costs during the school holiday period in June and July. This governmental support is expected to facilitate easier travel opportunities for tourists, potentially leading to a well-rounded tourism boost throughout the peak season.
Additionally, President Prabowo Subianto has instructed various ministries to expand the capacity of domestic airports to accommodate international flights. During a state visit to Singapore, he stated, “I have instructed the relevant ministries in Indonesia to increase the opening of all airports to direct foreign airline connections to our airports, many of which still need to be opened.” This initiative is set to not only increase the number of international visitors to Bali but also ensure seamless connectivity to and from various destinations.
New Flight Routes to Increase Visitor Access
Improvements in flight connectivity have already been observed over the past year, with more options becoming available for travelers. Starting June 25, 2025, Indonesia AirAsia is set to launch a direct service between Adelaide and Bali’s Denpasar. This new route will operate four days a week, significantly increasing access for travelers from Australia—one of Bali’s key markets.
Veranita Yosephine, CEO of Indonesia AirAsia, expressed enthusiasm about the new addition, highlighting, “We are thrilled to touch down in Adelaide and South Australia soon for the very first time. Australia is one of our most important growth markets.” Enhancements in connectivity are expected to continue, with Jetstar planning to introduce a Newcastle-Denpasar flight service in October 2025, further expanding travel options for tourists heading to Bali.
Looking Ahead
The proposed flight subsidies and new routes indicate a focused effort by Bali’s leaders to nurture the island’s tourism sector. As the high season approaches, these changes may play a crucial role in attracting more international tourists while supporting the local economy through increased visitation.
As Bali continues to innovate and enhance its tourism offerings, it remains to be seen how these initiatives will shape visitor experiences and industry sustainability in the long term.
