As Bali prepares to welcome over 6.5 million international tourists by the end of 2025, one area continues to stand out as a favorite for both returning and first-time visitors: Sanur, Bali’s oldest tourism resort.

A Transformative Experience

Sanur has undergone a significant transformation over the last five years, evolving into a Special Economic Zone for Medical Tourism. This transition marks a new chapter for the quaint fishing village, allowing it to maintain its charming ambiance while adapting to the demands of modern tourism. The combination of its laid-back atmosphere and cultural heritage continues to attract a devoted clientele, particularly from Australia and Europe.

New data indicates that a remarkable 60% of visitors to Sanur are returning guests, many choosing to stay longer than average. Reports show that these tourists often book accommodations for four nights or more, with many extending their visits to 10-14 days.

Insights from Local Tourism Leaders

Ida Bagus Gede Agung Sidharta Putra, the Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Denpasar City, shared valuable insights into the travel patterns observed in Sanur. As the owner of the Griya Santrian Sanur Hotel, he noted the impressive loyalty of travelers, some of whom have visited Sanur multiple times, with records indicating stays ranging from five times to as many as 84 times.

According to Putra, guests from Europe tend to reserve longer stays of approximately two weeks, while Australian tourists typically prefer a one-week visit. The quieter environment of Sanur, paired with its natural beauty, appeals to those seeking tranquility, setting it apart from the bustling scenes found in other parts of Bali, such as Kuta and Canggu.

Celebrating Tradition and Sustainability

As the Griya Santrian Sanur Hotel approaches its 53rd anniversary in 2025, it is planning a series of festive events. Among these, the hotel will collaborate with guests to release 53 baby turtles, highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability. “We help protect the environment, and these turtles are often born on the coast here,” explained Putra. This initiative not only promotes ecological responsibility but also engages guests in meaningful tourism practices.

The Griya Santrian Sanur Hotel is popular among returning visitors for its beachfront access and proximity to the new ICON Mall, as well as the recently opened Bali International Hospital. Other favored accommodations include the Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur, The Meru Sanur, Bali Beach Hotel, and the Hyatt Regency.

A Diverse Destination

Sanur’s diverse offerings make it an attractive destination for repeat visitors. Travelers can unwind by the resort’s poolside, enjoy sunbathing, or explore various cultural attractions and authentic experiences. One highlight is the Sindhu Night Market, where visitors can sample local Balinese street food, interact with local residents, and enjoy the area’s relaxed nightlife.

Additionally, Sanur serves as a gateway to Bali’s Nusa Islands, presenting further opportunities for exploration and adventure.

As Bali continues to attract millions of tourists, the commitment to preserving the unique charm and sustainable practices in areas like Sanur remains crucial. The island’s ability to blend tradition with modern tourism trends is what keeps holidaymakers coming back year after year.
