Bali Launches Anti-Thug Team to Combat Rising Crime Against Tourists

In a proactive effort to safeguard its reputation as a premier tourist destination, Bali has officially launched an Anti-Thug Team aimed at tackling the increasing concerns over organized crime and violence in popular resort areas. The announcement comes in response to a noticeable surge in reported robberies and assaults targeting both tourists and locals alike, particularly in bustling areas such as bus terminals, markets, streets frequented by visitors, and local food courts.
Collaboration Among Security Forces
The initiative, spearheaded by Badung Police Chief AKBP Arif Batubara, integrates resources and personnel from multiple local security forces. This includes officers from the Badung Police Department, military units stationed in Badung Regency, traditional village security teams known as Pecalang, and civil police officers from the Satpol PP. The collaborative approach is designed to ensure a robust defense against criminal activities that threaten the well-being and safety of both Bali residents and its millions of annual visitors.

The formation of the Anti-Thug Team follows recent statements from Bali’s Governor, Wayan Koster, who reiterated the island’s determined stance against organized crime. Governor Koster has called upon Traditional Village Leaders to play a pivotal role in addressing the underlying issues that lead young individuals into criminal behavior.
In a previous address, Koster denounced the presence of organized crime, declaring, “The form is a mass organization, but the behavior is like a thug.
