Bali Tourists Warned of Dangers of Full Moon Tides and High Waves
Island authorities urge caution as tourists flock to popular beach destinations this June
As the full moon rises on the evening of June 11, 2025, Bali’s coastal regions are experiencing significant environmental changes that could pose serious dangers to tourists. Local authorities are urging visitors to take safety warnings seriously, particularly regarding dangerously high tides, strong waves, and potentially deadly undercurrents along some of the island’s most iconic beaches.
Safety Concerns Amid Natural Phenomena
Beach destinations such as Diamond Beach and Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida are well-known for their stunning scenery, drawing large crowds of tourists eager to capture picturesque views. However, the natural beauty of these locations can also be deceptive. Authorities warn that the risk of high waves and strong undercurrents remains high, particularly around the time of the full moon when tidal activity can intensify.
Speaking to reporters, Nusa Penida Police Chief, AKBP Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta, emphasized the importance of safety while exploring these coastal areas. “We remind tourists to always be aware of uncertain weather,” he stated. “It is important to prioritize safety when on the cliff or on the coast.”
To ensure a secure experience for visitors, there will be an increased presence of security personnel and tourist support staff along Bali’s bustling coastal areas in the coming weeks. This ramp-up coincides with Bali entering its peak travel season, which typically sees an uptick in both domestic and international tourists.
Monitoring and Enforcement Measures
AKBP Sumerta confirmed that safety measures are being heightened around Kelingking Beach and other popular viewpoints as well as at Banjar Nyuh Port, a key transit point for tourists traveling to Nusa Penida. The Chief noted that the increased security is intended to prevent any potential disturbances and to create a safer environment for all port service users.
“Banjar Nyuh Port is one of the main entrances to Nusa Penida, which is crowded with tourists every day,” he added. Thus, police efforts are aimed not only at ensuring safety on the beaches but also at maintaining order in transportation hubs.
Weather Forecast and Advisory
Tourists planning to enjoy Bali’s beaches in the upcoming days are strongly advised to stay updated with local weather and wave forecasts. The Bali Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has issued warnings, with expectations of strong winds and high waves throughout the region.
Denpasar City Weather Forecaster Wulan Wandarana remarked on recent atmospheric disturbances contributing to unstable weather across Bali. She noted that while the island is currently in its dry season, rainfall is still possible, albeit less widespread than during the rainy season. Between June 12 and June 15, residents and visitors can expect thunderstorms and an increase in wind speeds.
The agency has predicted wave heights of up to 2.5 meters across southern waters surrounding Bali and Lombok. Tourists utilizing fast boats or ferries are particularly urged to check the latest weather updates and consult with their transportation providers before embarking on trips.
Recent Incidents Heighten Awareness
In light of recent events, including a sinking incident involving a Bali Fast Boat that capsized while carrying 89 passengers, safety concerns have escalated. The collision with high waves forced swift evacuations, highlighting the necessity of caution during maritime travel.
Tourists are encouraged to stay informed about the weather and safety conditions by following updates from the Bali Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency on social media, particularly their official Instagram account @BKMGBali.
As Bali continues to welcome tourists from around the world during this peak season, maintaining awareness of environmental conditions is crucial for ensuring a safe and enjoyable visit to this tropical paradise.
