Warning Issued to Tourists: Police Urge Caution While Riding Mopeds in Bali

Bali, Indonesia – The Bali police have issued a safety alert to tourists amidst rising concerns over moped and motorcycle robberies on the island, following the arrest of a 16-year-old boy involved in a series of thefts. The warning comes after a recent incident involving a Ukrainian couple, who became victims of a drive-by phone robbery in Ubud.

Incident Overview

The police chief of Gianyar, Kompol Gusti Nyoman Sudarsana, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, identified by his initials LKR. The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on February 26, when the victims were returning to their accommodation. Reports indicate that the male victim, known as OS, had placed his iPhone 15 in a holder attached to the motorcycle handlebars.

While traveling along Jalan Gunung Sari in Peliatan Village, OS and his girlfriend were overtaken by two men on a motorcycle. The thief riding on the back attempted to snatch the phone from the holder as they zipped past. In a desperate attempt to recover the stolen device, OS pursued the culprits but lost control of his bike on a steep, winding road, resulting in the couple falling towards a ravine near Villa Dua Sari.

Arrest and Further Investigations

Following the incident, Kompol Sudarsana explained that the suspect’s method involves forcibly seizing items from victims while riding on a motorcycle. "The motive for this crime is suspected to be economic factors," he stated.

The police are currently on the lookout for the driver of the motorcycle, known as Wayan Punggit. Meanwhile, LKR, who has a history of similar offenses, has been apprehended multiple times and has previously served three short jail sentences for his crimes.

Authorities believe that LKR has been delivering the stolen iPhones to a 30-year-old associate named Komang Ada from Karangasem Regency. Ada is also under investigation after 17 stolen iPhones were discovered at his residence. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.

The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of Ubud Police, Iptu I Kadek Patra, shared that the stolen phones were either sold as complete units or dismantled for parts, specifically LCDs and batteries. "The targets were domestic and foreign tourists," he noted, reiterating the need for caution among vacationers.

Safety Advice for Tourists

In light of these events, Gianyar Police Chief AKBP Umar has invited victims of theft in the Ubud area over the last few months to visit the Ubud Police station with proof of ownership for potential identification of their recovered items.

Tourists and moped riders are advised to take preventive measures to avoid becoming victims of theft. AKBP Umar stated, "Avoid putting valuables in places that are easily accessible to criminals. Always be vigilant and prioritize your safety." He emphasized the importance of stowing valuable items, like phones, in secured storage compartments rather than leaving them in plain view.

When using GPS for navigation, it is recommended to place the device in a secure location and consider using only one earbud to maintain awareness of surrounding traffic and potential risks.

Reporting Incidents

In the event of a theft or crime, tourists are encouraged to report the incident to local police or security officials promptly. Contrary to some urban legends, Bali police take thefts against tourists seriously. Quick reporting allows officers to swiftly act, increasing the chances of recovering stolen property before it can be further distributed or dismantled.
