Bali Issues Weather Warning: High Winds, Rain, and Dangerous Waves Forecasted Until May 1
April 29, 2025 | Jakarta
The Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) has issued a critical weather warning for the island of Bali, predicting high winds, rainfall, and hazardous maritime conditions expected to persist through May 1. The weather agency’s alert comes as Bali experiences a transitional shift in seasonal weather patterns.
According to Cahyo Nugroho, Head of the BMKG Regional III Center, the current forecast expects cloudy skies coupled with intermittent light rain across Bali. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 30 kilometers per hour, originating from the east-southeast. Nugroho emphasized the importance of safety during these weather conditions, particularly warning residents to steer clear of open areas like rice fields during thunderstorms.
Maritime Dangers Highlighted
The agency also issued specific warnings regarding maritime operations as waves are likely to reach heights of up to 2.5 meters in certain areas. Forecasts indicate that southern waters around Bali and areas in the Lombok Strait may see average wave heights of 2.5 meters. The Bali Strait is expected to have waves reaching up to 2 meters, while northern waters may experience conditions of 1.5 meters.
Nugroho advised fishermen, particularly those using smaller boats, to refrain from venturing out to sea when wind speeds exceed 15 knots (approximately 27 km/h) or when wave heights surpass 1.25 meters. Barge operators are also warned to exercise caution when winds exceed 16 knots and waves rise above 1.5 meters. For ferry services, the BMKG has advised vigilance when wind speeds exceed 21 knots and waves reach over 2.5 meters.
Preparation for Dry Season Encouraged
Alongside the immediate weather issues, the BMKG is urging the public, including farmers, to prepare for the dry season by storing water for agricultural use. This preparation entails optimizing irrigation and conserving water reservoirs to ensure adequate supply for upcoming farming activities.
The agency will actively monitor the ongoing weather conditions and is committed to issuing updates as necessary. As Bali continues to be a popular destination for tourists, both residents and visitors are advised to heed these warnings and remain vigilant during this period of unstable weather.
