Bali Introduces New Tourist Guidelines Amid Rising Concerns Over Visitor Behavior

In a bid to ensure that tourism in Bali aligns with local values and cultural practices, the province’s governor, Wayan Koster, has announced a series of expanded travel guidelines aimed at addressing issues of visitor misconduct. The new regulations stem from the Indonesian government’s ongoing "Love Bali" initiative, which seeks to promote a respectful and sustainable tourism environment.

During a recent press conference, Governor Koster emphasized the necessity for the new rules, stating, “We issued a similar regulation before, but as things change, we need to adapt. Tourists are advised to wear “modest and respectful clothing,” particularly when visiting sacred sites, which are integral to Bali’s rich cultural heritage. Additional regulations mandate that visitors do not enter these sacred areas without appropriate traditional attire or while menstruating, and prohibit climbing on sacred monuments and trees.
Moreover, tourists can expect stricter rules regarding interactions with the environment and local customs. The use of single-use plastics is banned, and littering will not be tolerated. Operating a business without proper permits is prohibited along with trading in illegal substances or endangered wildlife. The government has made it clear that disrespectful behavior towards local residents, officials, and fellow tourists will face serious repercussions.
Requirements for Travelers
For those intending to drive in Bali, the updated rules outline several key requirements. Travelers must hold a valid international or national driver’s license, adhere to traffic signs, avoid alcohol consumption when driving, and wear helmets on motorcycles. Furthermore, there is an emphasis on using only licensed tour guides and authorized services for money exchange, vehicle rentals, and accommodations.
Reporting Violations
In a move to bolster enforcement of these regulations, the Balinese government encourages the public to report any infractions through a dedicated WhatsApp hotline. This initiative aims to empower the community to maintain the integrity of Bali’s tourism sector, holding both visitors and service providers accountable.
