Thefts Targeting Tourists in Bali’s Travel Hotspots Raise Alarm Among Visitors and Local Authorities

Bali, Indonesia – Tourists in Bali are being urged to exercise increased caution while strolling through the island’s bustling resort areas as reports of thefts and robberies have surged in popular tourist destinations. This rise in crime has garnered attention from both travelers and local policymakers, leading to the establishment of a new security initiative.

Governor Wayan Koster recently announced the launch of the "Anti-Thug Team," a specialized unit dedicated to addressing the growing concerns of criminal activity targeting tourists. This initiative comes in response to alarming incidents, including a recent drive-by robbery involving a 60-year-old Saudi Arabian tourist, referred to by his initials EKA. The incident occurred on June 9, 2025, in Seminyak when a thief confronted EKA near Badangkasa Street at around 9:30 PM. The assailant, driving a motorcycle, quickly snatched EKA’s bag before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim distressed and seeking help.

Following the incident, Bali Police confirmed the details, urging tourists to report any crimes promptly. "We encourage visitors to be vigilant and report incidents immediately," stated AKP I Ketut Sukadi, Head of Public Relations for Denpasar Regional Police. EKA complied with this guidance and has officially reported the robbery.

Rising Incidents of Theft in Tourist Areas

The recent surge in thefts has not gone unnoticed, with multiple reports of similar attacks in Bali’s resort areas. Just last week, Kuta Police arrested a 36-year-old local man implicated in the robbery of a tourist from Oman. Investigations revealed a pattern in these thefts, typically involving a lone assailant on a motorcycle who targets unsuspecting tourists walking on quiet streets at night. These criminals appear to be particularly focused on tourists who display high-value jewelry or carry expensive items.

Badung Police Chief, AKBP M Arif Batubara, highlighted the modus operandi of these criminals, explaining that the suspect conducted surveillance by driving past potential victims before committing the robbery. "The suspect ensures the victim is unaware before launching the attack," Batubara remarked, noting the importance of awareness among tourists.

In another incident reported on June 2, a Spanish tourist was targeted in the Uluwatu area, where two men on a motorcycle stole her bag. This incident followed a similar pattern, with the assailants cornering the victim under seemingly innocent pretenses before fleeing with her belongings.

Safety Recommendations for Tourists

Authorities are responding to these threats by ramping up police patrols in high-traffic tourist areas. Tourists are advised to consider safer modes of transport, such as taxis or pre-arranged transport services, particularly when traveling at night, even in well-lit areas. The deployment of the Anti-Thug unit is part of a broader effort to enhance security in response to rising crime rates among visitors to Bali.

“While we are dedicated to reducing crime, it is crucial for tourists to take an active role in their safety,” emphasized Chief Batubara. Tourists are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior or incidents to local law enforcement swiftly. Additionally, visitors should utilize consular support as needed to navigate any issues effectively.
