Over Four Million Tourists Experience New Autogates at Bali Airport

Bali, Indonesia – The I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has seen over four million tourists utilize its newly installed autogate system since its full operational launch in October 2024. This significant milestone marks a modernization effort intended to streamline the immigration process for travelers arriving in Bali.

Enhanced Immigration Experience

As part of the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration’s commitment to improving services for both local residents and international visitors, the installation of 90 autogates at the airport’s arrival and departure terminals has provided an efficient alternative to traditional immigration checks. Alexander Maxwell, the Head of Immigration Information and Communication Technology Division at the Class I Special Immigration Office of TPI Ngurah Rai, reported in a recent press conference that these advanced autogates have allowed tourists to complete their immigration arrival checks in just seconds.

‘The autogate has become an effective solution to reduce waiting times at immigration checks,’ Maxwell remarked, emphasizing the system’s impact on passenger flow at the airport.

Tourists Embrace Convenience

Throughout 2024, a total of 6,994,903 passengers arrived at Bali Airport. Remarkably, more than 4 million travelers, accounting for approximately 57% of all arrivals, opted to take advantage of the autogate facilities. This underscores the success of the initiative in managing the increasing influx of international tourists, particularly from Australia, India, and China.

Australia remains the top country of origin for visitors to Bali, with over 1.5 million arrivals in 2024 alone, followed by India with 563,000 and China with 466,000 visitors.

E-Visas and Future Developments

While the autogate system has significantly improved efficiency, it is worth noting that its usage is currently restricted to foreign travelers possessing an e-visa, including the e-Visa on Arrival. This e-visa can be easily applied for online up to 48 hours before an individual’s arrival, with a processing fee of IDR 500,000. The e-Visa on Arrival allows for a 30-day stay, extendable once for another 30 days. Up to five travelers can be included in a single application, facilitating a smoother process for groups.

Maxwell also noted that changes to the visa application process are anticipated in 2025, following the signing of a deal that will see VFS Global taking over visa applications. However, specific details regarding these changes have yet to be disclosed.

For those opting not to use the e-Visa on Arrival, a Visa on Arrival can still be obtained in person upon landing at the airport.

Preparing for Increased Tourist Arrivals

With projections of over 6.5 million international tourists expected to visit in 2025, travelers to Bali are encouraged to take advantage of the new system and prepare ahead of time to minimize any potential delays. Recommendations include applying for the e-Visa on Arrival, completing an online customs declaration form, making a contribution to the Bali Tourism Tax Levy, and downloading the Satusehat One Health App, all aimed at ease of transition upon arrival.

The enhancements at Ngurah Rai International Airport represent a clear commitment to improving the traveler experience and accommodating the growing number of tourists eager to explore the beauty and culture of Bali.
