East Bali Tourism Development Takes Center Stage with New Initiatives

INDONESIA – The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is stepping up efforts to promote tourism in East Bali, much to the delight of both domestic and international visitors. Enthusiasts of the island can soon look forward to easier access and enhanced experiences in the picturesque regions of Karangasem Regency and beyond.

A Vision for Bali’s Tourism

During a Balinese Language Speaking Competition at the Samsara Living Museum in Karangasem Regency over the weekend, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa articulated her commitment to broadening the appeal of Bali’s tourism. She emphasized the need to develop tourism outside of the traditional hotspots in Southern Bali, stating, "I see how if the development of Bali tourism is not only focused on South Bali because Bali is not only in the south, but it also has the east, the north, which we must strengthen the development of."

Typically, the southern part of Bali boasts the island’s most renowned attractions, including Seminyak, Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Kuta. However, in recent years, both local leaders and the central government have recognized the importance of promoting lesser-known areas to diversify tourism and distribute economic benefits more evenly across the island.

Spotlight on East Bali

The East Bali region, particularly Karangasem Regency, is now in the spotlight as Ni Luh Puspa promotes its tourism potential. In her recent visit to various landmarks, including the exceptional Samsara Living Museum, the iconic Tirta Gangga Water Palace, and Tenganan Pegringsingan Tourism Village, she expressed her admiration for East Bali’s attractions.

Addressing attendees, she reassured them of her dedication to empowering local tourism alongside newly elected regent efforts. “This is also in line with the President’s ideals to develop tourism from the villages. Let’s work together to develop Karangasem tourism so its benefits can be felt by the community,” she said. Puspa also noted that discussions with the Karangasem tourism center will begin immediately to catalyze these developments.

Candidasa – An Underrated Gem

For travelers planning their visits, Karangasem offers a wealth of options, with Candidasa emerging as a hidden treasure on Bali’s southeast coast. This serene coastal destination retains much of its local charm and is beginning to attract more attention as it continues to grow its tourism offerings. Known for its clear blue waters, Candidasa Beach is one of the few areas in Bali to remain largely free of plastic waste, making it an ideal retreat for eco-conscious travelers.

Visitors can enjoy an array of accommodations, from cozy family-run guesthouses to the more upscale Puri Bagus Candidasa Resort, known for its stunning ocean-front views and tranquil atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle. For budget-minded travelers, the Rama Shinta Hotel & Resort provides Balinese-style rooms, complete with a private outdoor swimming pool, at rates as low as USD 40 per night during low season.

A Community Emphasis

Candidasa’s appeal lies not just in its natural beauty but also in the opportunity for visitors to connect with the local community. Travelers are encouraged to explore family-run homestays and guesthouses, which can be booked on-the-go, lending authenticity to their experiences. A basic understanding of Bahasa Indonesia can further enhance your interactions and lead to better deals while you take in the village atmosphere.
